The trends behind the rise of video consumption

Since the first transmission of TV almost 87 years ago, viewable news, movies, sport and entertainment have seen us glued to box sets, big screens and now, our smart devices and phone screens.

Ponder for a moment – when was the last time you watched a piece of video content – whether it be online, at home or the movies, on your phone or even on YouTube? Was it this morning or last night? For most of us, the answer would most definitely be daily (if not multiple times per day).

Without a doubt, video is everywhere. However, is it really so surprising that it is our preferred medium for learning? After all, ‘seeing’ is arguably our most important way of perceiving the world. Studies also strongly suggest that when we watch video our brain waves switch to Alpha mode, which is responsible for relaxation and insight. However, when our brains are in Beta mode (used for reading, comprehension and using logic), we tend to be more critical of everything.

Video entertains and influences you by invoking a series of emotions that result from showing images that connect human hearts and engaging brains. How many times have you purchased something or looked into a product because you saw an ad with a product that looked like it could help you?

TRENDS

Let’s have a look at some of the trends behind the surge in video consumption across the globe.

The use of the internet and data consumption are significantly increasing and this trend is set to continue. You can see the steady increase of mobile use over the years in the graph.

This is definitely driven by the amount of smartphones, tablets and internet connected devices that allow easy browsing and streaming. Further, many cafés, restaurants, shopping malls and even public transport services offer free WI-FI these days; another driving factor behind the trend.

When it comes to the rise of mobile-made searches, even Google has recognised this upward trajectory. Last year in 2015, Google declared that mobile search toppled desktop search. A Google spokesman noted that across 10 countries (including the US and Japan) “more Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers.”

The fact of the matter is this: we live in the age of information and people want it fast! We all have problems – be they small or large – and we look to the internet for solutions.

Browsing Google for information is easier and quicker than asking a stranger, grabbing a book, or calling someone who may not pick up. At the end of the day, technology is faster than humans.

As a business owner, think of all the products you sell. Now ask yourself: “Do I have videos for any of these to capture all those people who are watching?”
